DDNet: Connecting to and setting up your server

How to connect to your DDNet server and change the name, password, map and visibility.

2 minute read Updated 30.09.2026

Here you’ll learn how to connect to your DDNet server and change the most important settings.

Connecting

  1. Start the server on the server page with Start.
  2. Wait until the status shows “running”. You can follow the progress in the Console.
  3. In the game, connect via the multiplayer menu or direct connect using the address from the server page.
  4. The address (IP:Port) is shown at the top of your server page.

Important settings

You change these values in the Startup variables tab. Changes take effect on the next restart.

  • Server name (SERVER_NAME) – the name of your server.
  • Server password (SERVER_PASS) – the password for joining.
  • Map (SERVER_MAP) – the map on start, e.g. Sunny Side Up.
  • Public server (PUBLIC_SERVER) – 1 for public, 0 for private.
  • Max. players (MAX_PLAYERS) – how many players can play at the same time.

More settings can be found in the file ddnet/data/autoexec_server.cfg in the Files tab.

Good to know

  • If Public server is set to 0, the server doesn’t appear in the public list. In that case, connect directly using the address.
  • During setup, the server files are downloaded via Steam, so the first start may take a few minutes longer.
