Moving email from your old provider to us – without downtime

Create mailboxes, take your old mail with you, switch over – in the right order, no mail gets lost.

You've had your email addresses with another provider and want to switch to us? In this order, no mail gets lost.

1. Turn on email with us

Open your domain in the customer area and turn on email in the Email section. You need a mail or web hosting plan for this. At this point your mail still runs through your previous provider – so nothing changes yet.

2. Create mailboxes

Create the same addresses you had before, e.g. info@ and max@. For addresses that only forwarded mail, an alias is often enough.

3. Take your old mail with you

Your existing mail is still at the old provider. The easiest way to transfer it is with a mail program like Thunderbird or Outlook:

  1. Set up the old mailbox in the mail program via IMAP (if not already done).
  2. Additionally set up the new mailbox with us – access details.
  3. Select the folders or emails in the old mailbox and drag & drop them into the new mailbox.

Important: the old account must be set up via IMAP. With POP3 the mail is only on your PC – but you can drag it into the new mailbox just the same. Also back up your contacts and calendars if you keep them at the old provider.

4. Switch over

In the Email section, click Move email to Nexus. From then on, new mail arrives with us. This usually takes effect within a few minutes, in rare cases a few hours – during that time some mail may still land at the old provider. So check there now and then during the first few days.

5. Cancel the old contract

Only cancel the old mail contract once new mail reliably arrives with us and you've transferred everything.

Good to know

  • Domain registered elsewhere? If the domain stays with your previous provider, the portal shows you the required DNS records to copy – see Connecting your own domain.
  • Many mailboxes or large amounts of data? Send us a ticket – we'll help with the move.
