Minecraft Bedrock: Uploading your own world (.mcworld)

Bring your world from phone, tablet or Windows PC onto the Bedrock server – export, upload, switch.

You have a Bedrock world on your phone, tablet or Windows PC and want to keep playing it with friends on the server? Here's how.

1. Export the world

In Minecraft, open the world settings (pencil icon next to the world) and tap Export World under Game at the bottom. You get a file ending in .mcworld.

On Xbox, PlayStation and Switch this feature unfortunately doesn't exist – worlds can't be exported as a file from there.

2. Prepare the file

A .mcworld is a ZIP file with a different extension. Rename it, e.g. from My World.mcworld to my-world.zip.

3. Upload

  1. Stop the server.
  2. In the Files tab, go to the worlds folder and create a new folder, e.g. My World.
  3. Go into this folder and upload the ZIP with Upload ZIP and extract.
  4. Check: the folder must now directly contain db, level.dat and levelname.txt – not another subfolder in between.

4. Switch to the world

Settings tab → set World name to exactly the folder name (in the example My World), save and start the server. The console then shows Opening level 'worlds/My World/db'.

Good to know

  • Larger than 40 MB? Upload larger worlds via SFTP – how it works. In that case unzip the file on your PC first and upload the folder contents.
  • The previous world stays in the worlds folder. To go back, enter the old World name again.
  • Worlds with add-ons usually already contain their packs – see also Installing add-ons.
  • Game mode, difficulty and cheats are taken from the Settings tab, not from the world.
