Minecraft: Assigning permissions and ranks with LuckPerms

Create groups like VIP or moderator, assign permissions, sort players – with LuckPerms via console or web editor.

With LuckPerms you decide who may do what on your server – e.g. a VIP group that may fly, or moderators who may kick. LuckPerms is the most widely used permissions plugin for Paper, Spigot and Purpur.

Installing

  1. Server page → Installer tab → Plugins → search for LuckPerms → Install.
  2. Restart the server. The console then shows [LuckPerms] Enabling LuckPerms ….

The easiest way: the web editor

Enter in the console:

lp editor

LuckPerms replies with a link. Open it in your browser: there you create groups, click permissions together and assign players. Finally click Save and copy the command shown into the console – done.

The most important commands

In the console without a slash, in the game with / in front:

CommandEffect
lp creategroup vipcreate the group "vip"
lp group vip permission set essentials.fly truegive the group a permission
lp group vip meta setprefix 100 "&6[VIP] "prefix in front of the name (e.g. in chat)
lp user PlayerName parent add vipadd a player to the group
lp user PlayerName parent remove vipremove the player again
lp user PlayerName infoshows a player's groups and permissions

Every player is automatically in the default group – so give permissions that everyone should have to this group.

Good to know

  • The player must have been online once: Otherwise LuckPerms reports "A user for … could not be found". Let the player join briefly and try again.
  • Which permission do I need? Every plugin lists its permissions in its description, e.g. essentials.fly for EssentialsX.
  • Prefix in chat: LuckPerms only stores the prefix. It is displayed by a chat plugin, e.g. EssentialsX Chat.
  • Admin for everything: For yourself, OP status in the Players tab is still enough – you need LuckPerms for everyone else.
