When players walk into new areas, the server first has to generate the world there. That takes a lot of power – the server lags, especially when several players explore at once. With Chunky you generate the world in advance, e.g. at night or before your friends get going.
Installing
- Server page → Installer tab → Plugins → search for
Chunky→ Install. - Restart the server.
Pre-generating the world
Enter these in the console one after another:
| Command | Effect |
|---|---|
chunky world world | which world (world = overworld, world_nether, world_the_end) |
chunky center 0 0 | center point, usually the spawn |
chunky radius 2000 | how far in each direction (blocks) |
chunky start | off it goes |
chunky progress | show progress |
chunky pause / chunky continue | pause and continue later |
Chunky reports progress in the console continuously and finally Task finished.
How long does it take?
On our test server, a radius of 200 blocks took just over a minute. The time grows with the area: a radius of 2000 blocks is 100 times as large and takes roughly 1–2 hours. So start large areas when little is going on.
Good to know
- Storage: A pre-generated world with radius 2000 takes several hundred MB. Keep an eye on the storage on the server page.
- Set a world border: So nobody walks beyond the pre-generated area, set a border in the game, e.g.
/worldborder set 4000(diameter = twice the radius). - View distance: A moderate
view-distance(8–10) in the Settings tab also helps. - Still lagging? Then the CPU is often the bottleneck – see CPU power and How much memory does a Minecraft server need?
