Palworld: adjusting server settings (XP, capture rate, death penalty …)

What is in PalWorldSettings.ini, which values are worth changing – and what you should change in the startup variables instead.

2 minute read Updated 28.10.2026

Most Palworld game rules – XP, capture rate, death penalty, PvP and more – are in the file PalWorldSettings.ini.

Open the file

  1. Stop the server.
  2. Tab Files → open Pal/Saved/Config/LinuxServer/PalWorldSettings.ini.
  3. All settings are on one long line after OptionSettings=(…), separated by commas. Only change the number or value after the = and leave brackets, commas and quotes in place.
  4. Save and start the server.

If the file is empty or missing, start the server once and stop it again – then it is created.

Popular settings

The "Default" column shows the values your server ships with.

SettingMeaningDefault
ExpRateExperience (2.000000 = double)1.000000
PalCaptureRateCapture rate1.000000
PalSpawnNumRateHow many Pals spawn1.000000
DeathPenaltyWhat is lost on death: None, Item, ItemAndEquipment, AllItem
DayTimeSpeedRate / NightTimeSpeedRateSpeed of day and night1.000000
PalEggDefaultHatchingTimeHatching time of large eggs in hours1.000000
bIsPvP and bEnablePlayerToPlayerDamagePvP on (True) or off (False)False
GuildPlayerMaxNumPlayers per guild20

Change these values in the startup variables

Set server name, description, server password, admin password, max players and raids (ENABLE_ENEMY) in the Startup variables tab. The server writes them into the file on every start – a change made directly in the file would be overwritten there.

Good to know

  • Create a backup before making changes.
  • Reinstall resets the file to the defaults. Your previous file stays in the same folder as PalWorldSettings_<date>.ini – just copy the values back from there.
  • Some values (e.g. the death penalty) only apply to new events, not retroactively.
