Rust: Become admin – ownerid, moderators and key commands

One command in the console makes you admin. Reconnect once – done.

2 minute read Updated 08.11.2026

As an admin you can kick and ban players, go invisible and run commands right in the game.

Find your Steam ID

You need your SteamID64 – a 17-digit number starting with 7656119:

  • In the game: press F1 and type client.steamid.
  • Or enter your Steam profile on a site like steamid.io.

Make yourself admin

  1. Open the Console tab in the client area.
  2. Enter: ownerid 7656119XXXXXXXXXX "YourName"
  3. Then: server.writecfg – this keeps it after a restart.
  4. Reconnect to the server once.

removeowner 7656119XXXXXXXXXX takes the rights away again.

Moderators

Moderators can kick and ban but cannot use admin tools like flying:

moderatorid 7656119XXXXXXXXXX "Name" followed by server.writecfg.

Remove with removemoderator 7656119XXXXXXXXXX.

Key commands

In the Console tab or as admin in the game (F1):

Good to know

  • Admin rights apply after reconnecting.
  • Without server.writecfg, new admins are gone after a restart.
  • For finer permissions (e.g. groups), Oxide/uMod helps – see Install Rust plugins with Oxide.
