Rust: installing plugins with Oxide (uMod) and becoming admin

Turn on Oxide, upload plugins, grant permissions – and make yourself admin.

With Oxide (also called uMod) you extend your Rust server with plugins – e.g. kits, faster gathering, teleport or shops.

Turn on Oxide

  1. Tab Startup variables → set OxideMod (OXIDE) to 1, save.
  2. Restart the server. Oxide is installed on startup and updated on every start.

Installing plugins

  1. Download the plugin on umod.org – a .cs file.
  2. Tab Files → folder oxide/plugins → upload.
  3. The plugin starts by itself, no restart needed. In the Console you'll see "Loaded plugin …" or an error message.

The plugins' settings are then in oxide/config (one .json file per plugin). After a change, reload the plugin in the Console: oxide.reload PluginName.

Granting permissions

Many plugins work with permissions. Grant them in the Console:

  • To one player: oxide.grant user PlayerName kits.use
  • To all players: oxide.grant group default kits.use
  • To revoke: oxide.revoke user PlayerName kits.use

The available permissions are listed on the plugin page at umod.org.

Making yourself admin

  1. Find your Steam ID (17 digits), e.g. on steamid.io.
  2. In the Console: ownerid 7656119XXXXXXXXXX "YourName" and then server.writecfg.
  3. Reconnect once – now you have admin rights in the game.

Good to know

  • With the monthly Rust update (first Thursday of the month) a plugin may briefly stop working until its author updates it.
  • Create a backup before larger changes.
