Valheim: Become admin – adminlist.txt, commands and bans

Add your Steam ID to adminlist.txt, restart the server, open the console in the game with F5.

Find your ID

  • Steam: your SteamID64, a 17-digit number starting with 7656119 (e.g. via steamid.io).
  • With crossplay (startup variable Crossplay on): Valheim needs the ID with the platform in front, e.g. Steam_7656119XXXXXXXXXX. Xbox or Game Pass players see their ID in the game menu with F2.

Make yourself admin

  1. Start the server once so the files are created.
  2. In the client area, open the Files tab and go to .config/unity3d/IronGate/Valheim/ (the folder .config starts with a dot).
  3. Open adminlist.txt with Edit and put your ID on its own line below the comment lines.
  4. Save and restart the server.

Further admins each go on a new line.

Open the console in the game

Valheim only shows the console when it is enabled:

  1. In Steam: right-click Valheim → Properties → Launch options: enter -console.
  2. In the game, F5 opens the console.

Key commands

CommandEffect
kick NameKick a player (also by ID)
ban NameBan a player
unban IDLift a ban
bannedShow banned players
saveSave the world now
devcommandsCheat commands on/off (e.g. god, fly, spawn) – admins only

Banned players are in bannedlist.txt, allowed players (if you want a guest list) in permittedlist.txt – both in the same folder as adminlist.txt. As soon as permittedlist.txt has at least one entry, only these players can join.

Good to know

  • Changes to the lists apply after a restart.
  • With crossplay always use the Steam_… format, otherwise the entry has no effect.
