Valheim: installing mods (BepInEx and Thunderstore)

Setting up mods and modpacks on your Valheim server – and what your fellow players need.

2 minute read Updated 28.10.2026

Mods run on the server type Valheim (Mods / BepInEx) – the mod loader BepInEx is already set up there. If you have a regular Valheim server, switch to this type with Switch game. Download your world under Files or create a backup first.

A modpack with a single entry

If your modpack is published on Thunderstore, one entry is enough:

  1. Open the modpack page on thunderstore.io and copy the Dependency String (e.g. Author-ModpackName-1.2.0).
  2. Tab Startup variables → ModPack (V_MODPACK) → enter it, save.
  3. Restart the server. The modpack is installed on startup.

When a new version of the modpack comes out, enter the new Dependency String.

Individual mods

  1. Download the mod on thunderstore.io (Manual Download) and unpack it on your PC.
  2. Upload the .dll file(s) – usually in the mod's plugins folder – under Files into the folder BepInEx/plugins. Many files are easier via SFTP.
  3. Restart the server.

The server creates the mods' settings under BepInEx/config on first start.

Fellow players

Most mods must also be installed by the players – in the same version. The easiest way is a mod manager like r2modman or the Thunderstore App: create a profile, install the same mods or modpack, launch Valheim via the mod manager.

Good to know

  • Crossplay (Xbox/Game Pass) and mods don't mix – crossplay is therefore off on this server type.
  • If the server no longer starts after a mod, this article helps. Errors are shown in the Console.
  • Create a backup before larger mod changes.
