You've built a world in Valheim alone or with friends and want to keep playing it on your server? Here's how to upload it.
1. Find the world files on your PC
Press Windows key + R, enter %userprofile%\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim\worlds_local and press Enter.
Each world consists of two files with the same name:
<WorldName>.fwl– the world's name and seed<WorldName>.db– everything you've built and explored
Files ending in .old are older backups – you don't need them.
World not there? Then it's probably stored in the Steam Cloud. You'll find it under C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\<number>\892970\remote\worlds.
2. Pack it as a ZIP
- Quit Valheim so everything is saved.
- Select both files (
.fwland.db) of your world. - Right-click → Send to → Compressed (zipped) folder.
Put only one world into the archive – we import the first .fwl file we find in it.
3. Upload it to the server
- Server page → Manage card → Import save.
- Under Upload archive, choose the ZIP file and click Upload and set up. Keep the window open until 100 % is reached.
- Under History you can follow the progress. The page refreshes itself.
We stop the server, create a backup “Vor Spielstand-Übernahme” if a backup slot is free, put your world in place and start the server again.
World name
The server always loads the world set in the Startup variables tab under World name (WORLD). Your uploaded world is therefore renamed to that name – content and seed stay the same. You don't need to change anything.
Good to know
- The previous world with this world name is replaced. If you want to keep it, download it first under Files or create a backup – see Creating and restoring backups.
- Your character stays on your PC. In Valheim, characters aren't part of the world – you simply join with your usual character.
- There must be enough free storage on the server (about twice the ZIP size). Otherwise book more storage first under Book more power.
- On a trial server, Import save only appears once you keep the server.
- Connecting and settings: Valheim: connect to and set up your server.
