How much memory does a Rust server need?

Guide values by world size, player count and plugins – and why the need grows until the wipe.

For Rust, world size and player count decide how much memory the server needs. Our Rust servers start with 6 GB.

Guide values

World size (WORLD_SIZE)Players at onceRecommendation
3000 (default)up to 206–8 GB
3500–4000, some pluginsup to 5010–12 GB
4500 and more, many plugins10014–16 GB

What else affects it

  • Until the wipe: Every base, door and box adds to the need. Shortly before a wipe a server often needs much more than on day one. With Rust (Auto-Wipe) we reset the server automatically.
  • Plugins: Oxide plugins usually need little, large packages (e.g. events, shops) noticeably more – installing plugins.
  • CPU power: With many players, the next CPU tier helps against lag.

Start small, upgrade later

You don't have to decide right away: you can change the memory yourself at any time – your world, mods and settings stay, and on an upgrade you only pay the pro-rata difference. See Booking more or less memory.

On the server page, the history shows how much memory your server really uses and recommends a suitable tier if needed – more on this. If it lags even though memory is free, more CPU power usually helps more.

You can test the Rust server free for 24 hours – how it works. To order: Rent a Rust server.
