Project Zomboid simulates many zombies and a large map – so memory depends on player count, mods and zombie settings.
Guide values
| What you play | Players at once | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| No or few mods | up to 4 | 4 GB |
| Some mods or more players | 5–10 | 6 GB |
| Many mods, new maps or many players | 10+ | 8 GB |
What else affects the requirement
- Mods and maps: Additional maps from the Workshop cost the most – how to install mods.
- Zombie population: A higher zombie population in the sandbox settings puts more load on memory and CPU.
- Spread-out players: If all players are in different towns, the server has to load more areas at once.
Start small, upgrade later
You don't have to decide right away: you can change the memory yourself at any time – your world, mods and settings stay, and on an upgrade you only pay the pro-rata difference. See Booking more or less memory.
On the server page, the history shows how much memory your server really uses and recommends a suitable tier if needed – more on this. If it lags even though memory is free, more CPU power usually helps more.
